A Letter To The Father

Dear Heavenly Father,

Abba. Daddy. Almighty Creator. Everlasting God.

First of all, Thank You for this day, for the breaths You have allowed me to take, for the fingers that type this letter to You (I thought about handwriting – taking the time to write the ‘old-fashioned’ way – but decided against it, perhaps because at times my hand would not be able to keep up with the thoughts which will no doubt be tumbling out soon…).

Something is terribly wrong, Father. But I think You already know that. You’ve seen it coming before creation was a twinkle in Your eye.

I know You made us out love and in Your Divine Image, but… did You ever think that this would happen to humanity? Did You foresee the trajectory of destruction we have been on?

Perhaps You knew, and yet, You still gave us our wonderful free will. I could easily imagine that You were crying the whole time. I think You are crying now as You gently and incessantly call us to return.

It was us who chose the path we are on – perhaps we like to think: not me nor any of the people who are reading this now – but in many ways, we allowed this to happen.

“Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”

Ever since “the Old Man”, “the tempter” came to us – to our ancestors Eve and then Adam – we’ve horribly lost control of things.

We haven’t listened to You.

We have turned our backs on You.

We watch as Your little ones, the unborn, are crushed again and again.

Millions upon millions of innocents.

We thought that listening to our ‘betters’ in positions of power would exonerate us from pain.

But instead we have walked into our own prisons.

We worshipped at the shrine of science instead of seeking Your still, small voice…

Yes, we have had glorious moments on this Earth. Times when, upon reflection, things seemed to be going extraordinarily well – at least for most of us in the West.

For the most part, we’ve had all we ever needed materially speaking, but secretly, many of us knew something was askew.

We sat in our offices, year upon year, empty and unfulfilled, drowning in the quicksand of efficiency, management, bureaucracy, and ‘more’.

We put on a happy face at parties, laughing with friends who would later turn their backs on us.

We compared ourselves to others, trying to keep up with the Joneses, buying more and more things we didn’t need.

We allowed ourselves to become addicted to alcohol, drugs, work, impurity, people-pleasing, and myriad other things, when we should have filled ourselves with You.

If we honestly admitted it to ourselves, we especially in the West have been spiritually dying for an insufferably long time.

Now, as we are shaken and awakened to the truth of what we have been witnessing, we have seen the devil’s ugly face. We now know that his perpetrators are no longer kept ‘safely’ away in the black and white images of our history books and television documentaries. We have felt their chill in our lives.

They never left us.

They are still here.

It wasn’t enough for evil to accost Eve and Adam that first time in the Garden.

They want to destroy all of us, Your people.

Save for Your poorest and humblest ones who know You, many have become slaves to other gods.

We rejected Your Commandments, we looked the other way, we pretended we didn’t see, and have caused Your cup of justice to overflow.

It is now a raging river.

We are Nineveh.

Some feel that the window of opportunity is about to close, that the time of mercy is fast approaching the time of justice.

Yet still, You remain Our steadfast Father of Love. Ever patient. Ever calling. And I know You have a plan which includes all who turn to You. Our hands, our feet, our songs, our poetry, our prayers, our cries. You hear them all.

Soon, many will be singing Your praises, with voices ringing that “all is calm, all is bright”, calling for peace to all men and women of good will. While it is right and just to welcome Your Son in the manger, many overlook the fact that He was rejected. He was born into poverty, obscurity, and His very life was at risk. Father, we will welcome the babe in the hay.

Amid the celebrations to come, there is the ever-present sting of denial, silence, and pain.

We need You God.

Come and save us from ourselves.

Tear apart the firmament and let us see Your face.

Shatter the edifice of evil and cause the evildoers in our midst to tremble.

Shake us from our sleep.

Take us up into the fire of Your heart.

Blow a cleansing tempest into our souls.

Forgive our past and present.

Purify our future.

Come and heal our brokenness forever and ever.

Come in Your merciful way, and take away the evil that is obliterating us.

Transform all things, miracle upon miracle, so that we stand before You stupefied and speechless in love and repentance, ready, strong, and upright.

We must no longer deny the reality of You.

We have seen the devil, and we have had enough.

With love, Your daughter,

The MuSinGer
